Using Exercise To Treat
Depression
The last thing most people who suffer from depression will want
to do is exercise. The dark hole of depression can make even
something as simple as getting out of bed daily an apparently
impossible task. If you suffer from depression it is very
important that you see your doctor or a therapist first, but
don't be shocked if they prescribe some type of exercise
regimen for you to do as well as some of the more usual
treatments of depression.
Now, as hard as it may appear to get out and begin exercising
when you feel depressed, there are some actual benefits from
this.
1. Improves
your confidence.
As you get in better shape when you exercise, you will gain
more confidence in yourself and your ability to meet your
goals.
2. Increases
your self esteem.
Exercising improves your looks and your sense of self
worth. It will
also enhance your overall health and vitality.
3. A
distraction.
Having a set schedule for your exercise routine, regardless of
what it is, can provide you with something to look forward to
and can help take your mind off of your
problems.
4. Stress
relief. Exercise
is can be a good way to relieve stress and
frustration.
5. Getting
out. Exercising
will allow you to get out and interact with others, either at
the gym or just greeting people during your nightly
walk.
6. Good
coping plan.
Exercise is beneficial to anybody who does
it. It
signifies a positive way to cope with depression, anxiety
or stress for the reason that you will benefit ultimately
from it.
An essential thing you should remember is that as hard as it
may seem to start exercising when you're depressed is that once
you begin the benefits will far outweigh any negative thoughts
you may have about doing it. And when you get going don't
quit. When you've
made a decision to start exercising ensure that you don't over
do it either. The
reason for this is that if your body becomes sore and broken it
may cause you to lose interest. Here are some general
guidelines for you to consider before starting an exercise
program.
1. Consult
your physician or therapist before you begin. Your doctor can guide you and
refer you to someone who can help you set up an exercise
program that will be right for you.
2. Set simple
goals. Exercise
should be something fun and it should make you feel
good. Don't
approach it as if you were training for the
Olympics. Start
easy and then build from there.
3. Go with
what you enjoy. If
you have worked out at one time and enjoyed what you were
doing, then it may be better for you to start with that
again. For some
people simply going for a walk is enjoyable enough for
them.
4. Find a
workout buddy. Exercising with a friend is really good for
lifting your mood. It gives you someone to talk to and enjoy
your work-out with.
5. Go
outside. Getting
out in the fresh air and sun is always a great way for
improving your mood. Even if you work-out in a
gym, find the time to go for a walk a couple of days a
week.
6. Don't let
setbacks get you down. You may encounter some days
when you might not able to get in your
exercise.
Don't let this bother you, it happens to
everybody.
Keep at it and you will see your growth.
Using exercise as a treatment for depression is an increasing
tendency. However,
you should always consult your physician or therapist if you
are feeling depressed or exhibit the symptoms of
depressions.
Getting on an exercise program on your own isn't the right
thing to do. It
should be used along with other treatments like medication and
therapy. Taken
along with these other therapies, exercise can be a very good
way to assist you in battling depression.
