Learn How To Avoid Depression

There seem to be a large amount of people suffering from depression and we really should take a look at what causes it in the first place. The factors contributing to depression are very well known and thoroughly researched, but what actually causes it is still not very well understood. Newer studies, however, have revealed some of the factors that contribute to the probability of people developing depression.

Stress 

When it comes to conditions that attack people, stress could very well be number one.  It is well known that any stressful environment or event can lead to depression.  It could be anything like social stress, relationship difficulties, getting a job, etc.  Other situations that can produce depression are: job changing, death, moving out to a new place; even a fear towards the unknown can cause depression.  The list never ends.  Whereas these events are unavoidable, we must study every situation and learn how to avoid depression.  We should come up with an effective stress coping technique that will enable us to prosper even in stressful moments because they will never go away.  Stressful events just keep varying. 

Drinking and Drugs 

Individuals who take drugs and alcohol tend to be more prone to depression.  When people use these substances, especially at a young age, it affects their brains in a number of negative ways.  While these substances may appear to make a person feel good temporarily, it will hurt them in the long run and in most cases it provokes a difficult to control addition on the person. 

Drugs release the neurotransmitter known as dopamine in the pleasure zone of the brain.  For example, when you eat delicious foods your dopamine level increases by around 50 percent.  Sex will double this amount of dopamine.  However, when you take drugs, your dopamine can increase as much as four to ten times the normal levels.  After this ‘good feeling’ goes away you will feel very depressed.  This substance can provide a good way to fry your brain.  

In the long run, drugs will make a person more depressed than it will make him happy.  This effect will go downhill because the person taking drugs will feel the need to have more of the substance in order to stop the depression that comes afterwards and this is how the addiction is created. 

Not getting enough sleep 

Lack of sleep is like an epidemic that affects a huge amount of people.  In fact, studies have shown that as many as 40 percent of the adult population does not get the proper amount of daily sleep.  Among students, up to 71 percent suffer from sleeping disorders and lack of sleep. 

Sleep is crucial to a person’s health.  When you sleep, your body repairs itself and rearranges your thoughts.  Lack of sleep can contribute to a reduction of coherence in the brain waves.  This will eventually lead to depression.  Also, sleeping during the day and staying up late can interfere with the body’s natural rhythms.  This can also cause depression. 

Here are a few ways on how to avoid depression: 

·         Get enough sleep.   Sleep is vital for preventing depression.  Stabilize your life by getting enough rest and exercise every day.  The required amount of sleep will depend by each individual and age, but most people will need seven to eight hours of sleep per day.  

 

·         Maintain some regularity in your life.   Try to organize yourself by arranging activities so they can come at projected and regular times.  If you set your weekly, daily or monthly routine then your body will have more time to get used to the activities. 

 

·         Don’t push yourself past your limits.   Be well aware of stress and avoid stressors while you can.  If you feel you can’t do this, then try to see if you can deal with the stressors in a way that reduces the damage it creates. 

 

·         Enjoy the sunlight .  Sunlight and exercise can aid the brain to function at a higher level.  Find time to enjoy the sunlight and sty as active in the daylight as possible. 

 

·         Stay away from alcohol and drugs .  They may appear attractive, but all they do is create chaos in your life. 

 

·         Make at least one warm meal per day a priority .  Good eating habits and good health are very essential in order to keep you from getting depressed. 

 

·         Have as much fun as you can .  Nothing may work better in eliminating depression than having some fun time.  Social activities like chatting, joining a support group, sports and other hobbies  you enjoy practicing can do wonders for the healing of a stressed out and busy mind. 

 

Depression can certainly be avoided and treated.  What’s better, it can all be done having fun!  Follow the above mentioned tips and you will see how your life health will improve and you will look and feel much better.
